09:00 Indirect taxes , Richard Turnbull

The  presentation will cover when to register for VAT and how to maximise your VAT recovery, understanding the impact of VAT on your pricing, spin out transactions and working with Universities.

Presenter will be Richard Turnbull – Richard is an Indirect Tax partner specialising in VAT and is based in Deloitte’s Birmingham office.  Richard is a Chartered Tax Advisor who leads our Universities team and has advised on a wide range of University spin out projects, collaborations with industry, and projects funded by a wide range of sources including EU, DTI and development agencies.

09:15 R&D Tax Credits & Patent Box, David Byrne

This presentation will go through the core aspects of making an R&D claim: identifying eligible activities and qualifying costs, summary of best practice and recent experiences with HMRC as well as an update on the recent changes to the R&D scheme.  The Government is also consulting on a preferential regime for profits arising from patents, known as a Patent Box. The presentation will review the consultation exercise and the key messages emerging from it.

Presenter will be David Byrne – David is a Director in Deloitte’s National R&D Tax Service line and has extensive experience of making R&D claims in the IT sector, and in particular has recently helped a number of smaller, more entrepreneurial organisations. David has over 20 years experience of IT , ranging from programmer through to Enterprise Architect for a FTSE100 company. He presents R&D on a regular basis, with Partners such as Intellect and has  provided training to HMRC on the R&D tax scheme.

09:30 Employment taxes, James Hemphill

The presentation will cover the obligations that a company has in respect of employment taxes, including reporting, compliance and recent updates from HMRC.  The presentation will also provide information on cost saving ideas, specifically around salary sacrifice for employees and the use of tax efficient equity arrangements.

Presenter – James Hemphill – James is a Senior Manager in Deloitte’s Employment Taxes team recently transferring to Birmingham from our Cambridge office.  James has extensive experience in advising employers on all aspects of employment tax from PAYE and NIC compliance to the implementation of cost reduction strategies.  James primarily works with small and medium sized organisations in a wide range of industries.  Most recently James has assisted many start up organisations in the Biotechnology and Green Technology sectors fulfil their statutory employment taxes obligations and assisted them with the implementation of a range of cost saving ideas.
