Photonics R&D

Birmingham Science Park Aston’s, Optical Performance Centre (OPC), originally founded in 2000 under the previous name of Photonics Cluster (UK) has been specifically designed to be a technical resource, supporting the development of new products and processes; offering photonics expertise and equipment across multiple sectors. The OPC has been successful in doing this with over 600 companies and have also been successful in leveraging funding to assist the industry.

Using specialist equipment, the OPC attracts science and technology projects and brings academics and industry professionals together in mutually beneficial collaborations. The facilities contain systems and equipment typically far beyond the economic reaches of most technology ventures and SMEs, allowing small-scale businesses to test products and prove concepts to internationally recognised standards.

At Birmingham Science Park Aston, the continued efforts of the OPC in introducing advanced skills and driving R&D projects through technical support and funding is continually breaking new ground.

The OPC currently operates in the following industries; Automotive and Aerospace manufacturing, Lighting Manufacturing, Energy and Waste Reduction, Construction and the Food Industry.
